Epilepsy is one of the most common serious neurological conditions, yet public fears, taboos and misunderstanding about epilepsy persists thereby creating a reluctance to discuss it in the public realm.
The Indian Public Library Movement (IPLM) in collaboration with Medanta Telemedicine organised a health awareness session on epilepsy on 04 May 2018. Dr. Atmaram Bansal, an epilepsy specialist and Senior Consultant, Neurology Department, Medanta, was invited as the resource person for the session.
The session was live webcast and 12 libraries participated: 1) TS Central State Library Chandigarh 2) Amritsar District Library 3) Kota Divisional Library 4) Dr. Radhakrishnan State Central Library, Jaipur 5) Jhansi District Library 6) Faizabad District Library 7) UP State Central Library, Allahabad 8) Pune Marathi Granthalaya, Pune 9) M M Central State Library, Patiala 10) Etawah District Library 11) Varanasi District Library and 12) District Library of Kathua, Jammu& Kashmir.
While discussing the types of seizures during epilepsy, Dr. Bansal emphasised the need to be aware of the epilepsy episode as it helps in managing the seizure and understand appropriate precautions and safety measures. Dr. Bansal cautioned against some of the prevailing social stigma and practices related to controlling the epilepsy episode. The session also discussed the treatment available for epilepsy.
It was an interactive session, where more than 400 users of public libraries participated and had their concerns addressed by the doctor.
